The Choicest & Tastiest Indian Sweets
& Savouries |
|
City
Sweets centre was started by it's founder Mr Jethalal
Thanki , who came to the UK from Tanzania (East
Africa) in 1970. He was a specialist sweet maker
in Dar-es-Salam and having earned a great reputation
and loyal client base, he decided to open an Indian
sweet (mithai) shop in Forest Gate, the east of
London. |
|
His
two sons, Natwarlal and Vasantray Thanki joined
the family business and have worked tirelessly to
evolve the business and bring their father's recipes
to sweet tooths all over the world. Natwarlal comments
"The shop demanded very long working hours
in the early days but we have worked together as
a team. The whole family was involved." |

|
Both
brothers have chosen to follow their fathers traditional recipes
but have changed the finer points in terms of texture and decorative
finishing. All the sweets are made on the premises, but whereas
they were previously made by hand they are now made using machines,
which saves a lot of time and has allowed them to increase output
to match with an ever increasing demand. |
|
Now
the third generation of the family have started to take an interest
in the business and have their own input to give, from presentation
to expanding their international clientele. |
|
City
Sweets Centre has continued to retain a loyal clientele. Natwarlal
comments "Though many of our oldest clients have moved
out of the area, they continue to come back to us for their
sweets. Word of mouth and our reputation have ensured our success,
and we've retained a very loyal customer base." |
|
Vasantray
adds: "Children who used to come to our shop with their
parents years ago, now come in with their own children. Especially
for our signature sweet, mawa pera!" |
